This result shows that over 50% of my audience prefer listening to pop music over other genres such as Rap, Rock and R&B. This is useful as it would aid me in choosing which conventions of specific genres to add into the video and how they the audience will respond to them. The audience will expect to see some things that are usually in pop music videos.

This is useful as it makes clear the type of lighting that the audience prefers to see in their favourite music videos. Instead of dim and low key lighting I will choose bright High Key lighting in the video. This is because it will meet the audiences expectations and so that there is a similarity which is something that Steve Neale says will keep the audience satisfied in his theory. This will alter my design of the video making the final product predominantly High Key lighting.

These are things that the audience will expect to see in a music video.

Most of the audience will prefer a brighter colour scheme. This is due to most of them preferring to watch pop music videos. These are usually happy themed and the emotion is further exaggerated through the use of bright colours and high key lighting. This shows that the audience will prefer to see the same conventions that are in the pop music videos. This means that in my music video I am going to use bright colours to represent the message.

100% of the audience prefers narrative music videos. narrative music video or story driven music video is a video that has a driving plot, theme or visual motif running through it that engages the audience, tells a story or drives a theme throughout the video. This means that I will try to put a story into the final video to support the lyrics.

My Audience -
Gender - Female
Age - 16 - 18
Socio-economic class - Working/Middle
Likes - Bright Colours, Narrative, High Key Lighting, Pop Music, Pop Video conventions
Dislikes - Dark colours, Rock Music, Abstract Music Videos, Low Key Lighting

NEA Planning Part 6 - Schedule

In conclusion I think that it is important to produce a schedule of activities when working on a production because it means that I will efficiently complete all the task that I need to do in the right order and in the right time. I am likely to struggle with creating the graphics and text for the video because it will be hard matching it to the personality of the artist. I am also likely to struggle with writing text for the website. In addition to this I will struggle with ensuring the video is exactly 3 minutes long as I have a lot of ideas to put into the video. In order to complete these difficult tasks I will research tips and tricks on how to use different software to create these graphics.

My Mood Board

Brief 4 Music Video and online
One, three minute music video
Content must be suitable for broadcast on streaming sites such as YouTube and age appropriate for young adults from the age of 16
One homepage and one linked page
Cross-media production target audience a fun-loving 16–25 year old mass market demographic

In this task I'll explore different types of images, fonts and colours to use in my Music Video.  I shall be looking at different connotations and how these affect the way my target audience might view the target audience. By creating this mood board I will also be exploring creative ways to present my work.

Mood Board for Music Video

Mood Board for Website
This helped define my product because it enabled me to understand the schemes and branding that I will use that will be clear branding across the set products for the video it will be a RYB colour scheme to represent the bright culture and social background  of the artist. For the website it will be more of a purple and white colour scheme as it will show the culture and the buoyancy of the artist is. I will be using a few close up shots that will be use when the artist is singing. For example there will be a scene where the artist grabs the camera and the video transitions into his face. This is in addition to mid shots and long shots to show the scenery and background while the artist walks across. I will use serif fonts in the productions as it will look more casual and will be preferred by the 16-25 year old demographic. I will try to use intertextuality to add comedy to the music video. Im likely to use the Male Gaze in my production as it is stereotypically used in the pop genre of music.

NEA Research Part 7 - Producers/Directors Research

In this post I will be researching a load of music video producers linked to my chosen brief genre, paying attention to the use of conventions and the different styles they incorporate in the type of music videos they produce. I will also be making reference to some of their existing products. This will help me gain inspiration for my own video and learn some of their techniques for my own production of both the music video and the website. I think by understanding the producers in music video production, it will enable me to produce a music video that follows and reflects their style more effectively.

In conclusion I have learnt how the top quality music video editors use different techniques and editing skills to convey their messages and to support the messages of the artists in the video. I will try to use Dave Meyers style of using editing to support my final product and to give my video more meaning. I will use editing to give more meaning to the video by using my skills to exaggerate the artists emotion in the video. For example when the artist gets angry in the video I will edit the video and add drawing over the artist and give him red eyes along with him tensing up.

NEA Research Part 6 - Institutional Research

In this post I will be researching the Sony Music Institution, paying particular attention to the type of company that Sony is and the type of music videos they produce.  I will also be looking into how Sony's ethos is reflected in their products. This will give me ideas on how I can incorporate this into my own production of both the music video and the website. I think by understanding the institution linked to my chosen brief, it will enable me to produce a media text that follows and reflects Sony's style, ideologies and ethos more effectively.

Sony Produce:

  • Televisions & Home Cinema
  • Audio
  • Cameras
  • Mobile, Accessories & Smart Devices
  • Playstation

Sony is a conglomerate company. Some of their subsidiaries are:

  • Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • Sony Music Entertainment
  • Sony Financial Services
  • Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony makes a lot of its money from the playstation. From April to June 2018, Sony shifted 3.2 million PS4s - only 100,000 less than were sold during the same period last year. Just over 40 million games were purchased, and the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers is holding relatively steady at 33.9 million (down from 34.2 million at the end of March). In total, Sony's PlayStation arm brought in nearly $750 million in profit (JP¥83.5 billion), which is more than twice as much money as any other department.

In 2017 Sony made 7.27 billion USD

The mission of Sony Music Entertainment is to inspire the world to do great things through the influence of music by promoting inspirational melodies and lyrics.

I will incorporate the ethos and mission of Sony by adding subtle inspirational messages into the final music video. The mission statement is to inspire the world through melodies and lyrics. For example I will use lighting and colour correction effects to further imply the emotion shown in the lyrics and from the artist.

NEA Research Part 4 - Media Language and Representation

Media Language and Representation in Music Videos

In my final product I will use this research to show highlight the different representations of elements in my video. For example i will use B-roll footage like in the Kendrick Lamar video to help the audience take in the atmosphere and to help the audience to take in the ambience. I will also use colour correction to create a vibrant atmosphere. This will help my final product as it will help solidify the meaning that I am trying to convey.

NEA Research Part 2 - Genre Research

In this post I am going to  research the genre of the brief that I have selected.  The reason I doing this is to find and analyse codes and conventions of media texts in order to help me produce the best media product that i can produce which shows the skills that I can have. The genre of the text as described in my chosen brief is pop and I'll be looking at the conventions of 3 media products that of the same genre.

Media Conventions of a Pop Music Video:

Mis-en-scene:
  • Bright Colours
  • Make Up
  • Fashion Accessories
  • Change in outfit
  • Lighting (High Key)
  • Happy Body Language
  • Love story, Heartbreak story
  • Party Scene
Editing:
  • Tints and Filters to boost colours
  • Photoshopped artists to make them look perfect
  •  Modify the speed of clips for dramatic effect

Camera Shots:
  •  Eye level: this is the most common angle used in pop music videos, this is where the camera shows the subjects, how we would see them if we were to see them normally. This angle is perceived as being a fairly neutral shot.
  • Low angle shot: This is where the camera is positioned below the subject in focus. These types of angled shots aren’t necessarily commonly used within music videos, but they can be spotted occasionally
  • High angle shot: this is when the camera is placed above the artist facing downwards, this shots is commonly used when the focus is solely on the artist, as these shots seem to capture the artist shoulders and above.
  • Birds’ eye angle: this is where the camera is positioned directly above the subject in the music video; this shot is perceived as being unnatural as we as the audience don’t see it often in music videos and films.
  • Close ups: This is where the shot will consist of an individual who will take up the majority of the frame.
  • Medium shots: A medium shot is when the shot is composed of the subject from the waist and above, these shots help to portray the artist, but also at the same time show the context of the background/ location the artist is in.
  • Wide shot: These are the shots which provide an overall view of the whole setting, these shots never have a specific focus, as the whole frame is taken into consideration by the audience

In conclusion I found how Music Videos use similar conventions within the same genre to create a link for the audience and to get the audience engaged with what the audience wanted to see. My research helped me realise and discover what the pop music artists put in their video to attract the audience and help the audience idolise the artists. I would consider adding the High Key Lighting into my final product in addition with the bright colours and happy body language because it appeals to the target audience and helps convey the representations.

NEA Research Part 3 - Intertextuality research

Intertextuality Research

I have done a video about Intertextuality in music videos.

In conclusion, the research helped me to understand how music videos use intertextuality to engage the audience more and to help the audience understand the message more and the artists views. I would consider adding intertextuality from already produced films into my videos to help maintain the demographic of the target audience and to attract fans of other media texts to the music video. My idea has developed as it will have little bits of media texts incorporated to help the audience understand the meaning behind the video.

NEA Research Part 1 - History of Music Videos

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • K: The requirements for each of the briefs set by OCR.
  • U: How to approach the chosen brief, including writing the statement of intent.
  • BAT: Choose a brief and start planning what to write in the statement of intent.
  • CO: Use media terminology (all areas of the theoretical framework) in your written and verbal communication.

I have chosen the Brief 4 Music Video and Online.

I have chosen this because it is the one area that i know well when it comes to music.
- What skills do you already have that can help you produce your chosen media texts?
One of the skills that I have is I am good at editing videos. For example, I am able to add the right transitions such as the dissolve, the fade etc at the right time. Also i can choose different camera shots to use that will illustrate the meaning of the media texts.
- What skills do you intend to develop whilst working on your media texts?
During the development i want to improve my use of mis-en-scene by choosing various locations and adding different props to the video to make it more meaningful to the lyrics and the whole song. Furthermore I want to develop my use of graphics in the video to emphasise the mood of the track.
