In this post I am going to research the genre of the brief that I have selected. The reason I doing this is to find and analyse codes and conventions of media texts in order to help me produce the best media product that i can produce which shows the skills that I can have. The genre of the text as described in my chosen brief is pop and I'll be looking at the conventions of 3 media products that of the same genre.
Media Conventions of a Pop Music Video:
Mis-en-scene:
- Bright Colours
- Make Up
- Fashion Accessories
- Change in outfit
- Lighting (High Key)
- Happy Body Language
- Love story, Heartbreak story
- Party Scene
- Tints and Filters to boost colours
- Photoshopped artists to make them look perfect
- Modify the speed of clips for dramatic effect
- Eye level: this is the most common angle used in pop music videos, this is where the camera shows the subjects, how we would see them if we were to see them normally. This angle is perceived as being a fairly neutral shot.
- Low angle shot: This is where the camera is positioned below the subject in focus. These types of angled shots aren’t necessarily commonly used within music videos, but they can be spotted occasionally
- High angle shot: this is when the camera is placed above the artist facing downwards, this shots is commonly used when the focus is solely on the artist, as these shots seem to capture the artist shoulders and above.
- Birds’ eye angle: this is where the camera is positioned directly above the subject in the music video; this shot is perceived as being unnatural as we as the audience don’t see it often in music videos and films.
- Close ups: This is where the shot will consist of an individual who will take up the majority of the frame.
- Medium shots: A medium shot is when the shot is composed of the subject from the waist and above, these shots help to portray the artist, but also at the same time show the context of the background/ location the artist is in.
- Wide shot: These are the shots which provide an overall view of the whole setting, these shots never have a specific focus, as the whole frame is taken into consideration by the audience

In conclusion I found how Music Videos use similar conventions within the same genre to create a link for the audience and to get the audience engaged with what the audience wanted to see. My research helped me realise and discover what the pop music artists put in their video to attract the audience and help the audience idolise the artists. I would consider adding the High Key Lighting into my final product in addition with the bright colours and happy body language because it appeals to the target audience and helps convey the representations.
