NEA Research Part 6 - Institutional Research

In this post I will be researching the Sony Music Institution, paying particular attention to the type of company that Sony is and the type of music videos they produce.  I will also be looking into how Sony's ethos is reflected in their products. This will give me ideas on how I can incorporate this into my own production of both the music video and the website. I think by understanding the institution linked to my chosen brief, it will enable me to produce a media text that follows and reflects Sony's style, ideologies and ethos more effectively.

Sony Produce:

  • Televisions & Home Cinema
  • Audio
  • Cameras
  • Mobile, Accessories & Smart Devices
  • Playstation

Sony is a conglomerate company. Some of their subsidiaries are:

  • Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • Sony Music Entertainment
  • Sony Financial Services
  • Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony makes a lot of its money from the playstation. From April to June 2018, Sony shifted 3.2 million PS4s - only 100,000 less than were sold during the same period last year. Just over 40 million games were purchased, and the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers is holding relatively steady at 33.9 million (down from 34.2 million at the end of March). In total, Sony's PlayStation arm brought in nearly $750 million in profit (JP¥83.5 billion), which is more than twice as much money as any other department.

In 2017 Sony made 7.27 billion USD

The mission of Sony Music Entertainment is to inspire the world to do great things through the influence of music by promoting inspirational melodies and lyrics.

I will incorporate the ethos and mission of Sony by adding subtle inspirational messages into the final music video. The mission statement is to inspire the world through melodies and lyrics. For example I will use lighting and colour correction effects to further imply the emotion shown in the lyrics and from the artist.
